Meat processor gets real-time access to data, competitive edge from MPLS network

VANCOUVER, Wash. – (Nov. 6, 2007) – New Edge Networks said it received a multi-year contract to provide managed network services to Superior Farms, one of the nation's largest lamb processors that supplies retail and food service industries.

New Edge, the business communications unit of EarthLink Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNK), received a three-year contract to build and manage Superior Farms' primary private wide area network as well as a standby high-speed backup network for disaster recovery.

New Edge also will provide its ReadyOffice remote access solution for connecting Superior Farms employees to their company's integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP) data warehouse from their home or laptop computers.

Superior Farms is installing a high-speed Multi-Protocol Label Switching, or MPLS, network that will prioritize network traffic and give the Davis, Calif.-based company online, real-time access to precision cost data. The data is powered by a proprietary computer system that models real-time market prices and supply-chain costs to be able to instantly quote prices and delivery schedules for customers, which include retailers like Wal-Mart, Publix Super Market and Jewel-Osco.

VANCOUVER, Wash. – (Nov. 5, 2007) – PHONE+ magazine recognized New Edge Networks as a top 50 Channel Program winner in the telecommunications trade publications’ inaugural channel program contest.

New Edge Networks, the business communications unit of EarthLink Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNK), was among hundreds of nominees that included carriers, resellers, master agents and manufacturers. The top 50 standouts are featured in the PHONE+ Channel Program Guide special issue that is also available at www.phoneplusmag.com/ebooks.

“Voted on by indirect sales partners, these communications suppliers provide their agents with that extra something -- extra attention, rapid quotes, sales training or special promotions -- that makes agents want to do business with them,” said Mike Saxby, group publisher for PHONE+.

New Edge maintains a comprehensive channel program that includes various selling partnership affiliations and competitive commission structures. An active12-member agent council meets monthly to provide feedback on existing and new sales and service initiatives. Channel sales represent more than 70 percent of New Edge’s revenue.

“This past year, we invested a lot of time, money, and resources on strengthening our channel program,” said Kevin Flaherty, vice president of sales for New Edge Networks. “Our goal is to instill pride among our selling partners that they are part of a world-class program.

“New Edge has a comprehensive services portfolio, strong financial stability, and we make it easy for partners to do business with us,” Flaherty said. “Easy access to our online partner portals facilitates sales, ordering, and service process and helps strengthen our partners’ relationships with their clients.”

In addition to recognizing the Top 50 Channel Programs, the PHONE+ Channel Program Guide special issue recognizes the Top 15 Channel Managers and includes articles that focus on the key traits of a successful channel program and master agency, how to sustain a healthy partner relationship, and the anatomy of an agent agreement.

Action could spark increased demand, profits; avoid customer backlash

DALLAS – (Oct. 12, 2007) – The top executive of New Edge Networks Thursday afternoon called on the telecommunications industry to improve service level guarantees that could lead to increased business demand and profits.

Speaking at the 2007 TelephonyLive Telecom Summit in Dallas, Linda Beck, president of New Edge Networks, the business services unit of EarthLink Inc., (NASDAQ: ELNK), also challenged the telecom industry to develop new services for filling a price gap between digital subscriber line, or DSL, and high-speed T1 connections used for wide area networks.

“With improved service level agreements (or SLAs), small and midsize businesses are more likely to add new business applications and increase their bandwidth requirements more quickly moving to T1 MPLS networks,” Beck said to an audience of telecom industry executives during her closing keynote remarks.

“Today, many SMBs are deferring these decisions because they cannot justify the expenses for T1 connections,” Beck said. “The gap between DSL and T1 pricing is too big.”

Currently, most communications carriers guarantee repairs on business DSL lines within 24 or 48 hours. The guaranteed repair interval for more expensive T1 or frame relay connections is four hours. The monthly cost for a business DSL line is under $100 compared to about $400 or more for a T1 line.

“As businesses become more dependent on their DSL-based networks, current SLAs will give us a black eye,” Beck said. “This needs to change to avoid customer backlash and stimulate increased usage of DSL as a stepping stone to full T1-based networks.”
